$500 of power cable or $500 of panels

Power cables made a real but subtle difference in my system, and with the same $500 I would still buy acoustic panels first.

A heavy coiled power cable and a wrapped acoustic panel balance opposite sides of a wooden floor.

If you are debating between a $500 power cable and $500 worth of acoustic panels, buy the panels first. I say this as a man who owns plenty of power cables.

Better power cables in my system gave me a lower noise floor, better dynamics and more grip on the bass. I have heard it, and I am not taking it back. But next to speaker cables or room treatment, those differences are subtle.

There is also a footnote that belongs to my city. In Dubai where I am, the electrical grid is actually quite clean, so some of my power improvements were subtle to begin with. I have heard systems in other buildings, on noisy power, where a conditioner transformed the sound. That is context, not a contradiction.

The panels carry no such footnote. Your room has its first reflections and its bass problems whoever supplies the electricity. And you know what? Before spending thousands on cables, spend hundreds on room treatment, because room acoustics matter more than any cable upgrade ever will.

Power is a refinement and the room is the foundation. Refinements come after foundations.
