A flagship turntable into a $500 amplifier

One school says invest in the source first, and I think it confuses the first link in the chain with the whole chain.

a massive high-end turntable on a flimsy shelf connected to a tiny budget amplifier and small plastic speakers, a comical imbalance.

There is a school of thought that says invest in the source first and work your way down the chain. I understand the logic. I do not follow it.

Put a flagship turntable with some Amazon cartridge into a $500 integrated amplifier and cheap speakers, and it will not perform. It certainly won't. That is like putting a Formula 1 engine into a family minivan and wondering why it doesn't win races.

A system works as a whole. The cartridge, the phono stage, the electronics, the cables and the room each either unlock the component before them or strangle it. A revealing, synergistic system is what lets any single part show what it can do, and a mismatched one hides the best part behind the worst.

I learned this the hard way, from the other direction. I once paired $30,000 worth of speakers with the wrong amplifier and wondered why they sounded hollow. It cost me a lot of money and a lot of years to see the pattern.

A balanced system will always outperform one where a single component wildly outclasses the rest. Always, so buy the chain, not the champion.
