And then I became insufferable

After my first real streamer I forced every visiting friend into A/B tests, and this is my apology from a former Apple TV listener.

Two empty listening chairs each hold a remote, with a small switch box on the floor between them facing a stereo.

My digital journey started where most people's does, with an Apple TV, and it sounded fine to me. Then my dealer convinced me to buy the Eversolo A6 Master Edition, around $1,000 for a streamer and DAC. And then I became insufferable.

Friends would come over and leave with a test. Apple TV against the Eversolo, listen to this, guess which is which. Once you hear it, I told them, you cannot unhear it. I was that guy.

The irony is that I had been the Apple TV listener myself, and not long before. Apple Music through the Apple TV, and before that CDs and Blu-rays through a PlayStation 3, with files from hard drives played through the same console. I loved music on all of it, and nobody forced me into a blind test.

The difference was real, and I still hear it. What I forgot is that my friends had come for the music and the company, not for my discovery. A new convert always wants a witness, and I made every guest one.

So this is my apology to everyone who sat through those tests. The Eversolo was better; I was worse.
