Klipsch magic, Wilson truth

Auditioned like for like, the La Scala gave me immediate fun and the Yvette gave me a window into the recording; I wanted the window.

KDAbout 1 min read
a listening room split by light: a warm golden glow around one speaker and a clear, cool, precise light around the other, one chair in the middle.

I auditioned the Klipsch La Scala and the Wilson Yvette apples to apples, with comparable McIntosh electronics, a HiFi Rose streaming Qobuz, and AudioQuest cabling and conditioning. The La Scalas gave me that Klipsch magic. The Wilsons gave me truth.

The magic is real, and I will not pretend otherwise. The La Scala's horns grab you the moment the music starts, with presence, vividness and a vintage soul of their own. It is fun, engaging, immediate, and I would recommend it to many people without hesitation.

Truth is a different product. The Yvettes placed instruments in a three-dimensional space with a precision I had not experienced before, and revealed reverb tails and room ambience that had been in those recordings all along. Their 20 Hz extension you do not hear; you feel it in your chest.

Don't misunderstand me, truth comes with conditions. The Yvettes reveal everything, the good and the bad, so they need the amplification, the treated room and the source chain behind them. I had that foundation, so in the end I never really had a choice.

Magic entertains you for an evening. Truth is what I wanted to live with for years.
