Light at the end of the bias tunnel

Everyone in this hobby carries bias, and what separates us is not having it but where we stand in the tunnel it builds.

a long dark tunnel with a hi-fi listening chair placed in the middle, a faint glow of light at the far end.

Every debate I have starts with the same admission, my bias first and then everyone else's. The question was never whether we have biases. It is whether we are honest enough to say so.

I see bias as a stage of the audiophile journey, not a character flaw. Becoming an audiophile means building certain beliefs about brands, cables, formats and prices. Some of them are too hard to see or admit, and extremely hard to overcome once they are in.

Part of the journey is going through that stage, maturing through it and evolving towards objectivity. Some of us achieve it, and others see their bias clearly and still cannot overcome it. Others are still inside, with no visible light at the end of the bias tunnel, defending a purchase as if it were a principle.

I do not claim to be out of the tunnel. I claim to know it is there, and I would rather name my bias in front of you than let you find it in my answers.

Nobody gets out of the tunnel by denying it exists. Admitting it is the first metre of the walk.
