The gear serves the music

The industry wants constant gear upgrades, while the smartest listeners fix the room first, because the gear is there to serve the music.

KDAbout 1 min read
A single record playing in a softly treated room while a pile of glossy equipment brochures lies unopened on the floor beside the listening chair.

I closed my room film with one sentence, and I would hang it above my rack if I could. The gear serves the music, not the other way around.

It sounds like a slogan until you look at what an upgrade cycle does to your listening. You stop playing albums and start playing test tracks. You stop asking whether you enjoyed the evening and start asking what the next box will fix, and at that point the music is serving the gear.

Let me be clear about who benefits from that order. The audio industry wants you to upgrade your gear constantly; that is its business, and I do not hold it against anyone. The smartest audiophiles improve the room first, because the room is what every note travels through on its way to you.

Fixing the room is the most direct way I know to put the music back in charge. Positioning costs nothing, first reflections and corners cost hundreds, and afterwards you hear what the gear you already own was doing all along. The albums come back; the test tracks go back in the drawer.

When you catch yourself listening to the system instead of the song, stop shopping. The song is the reason any of this exists.
