$25,000 of cable in the system, $10,000 in a box

Over about 15 years I bought more than 100 cables; the ones in storage are the honest half of that number.

an open storage crate packed with neatly coiled audio cables of many thicknesses under a garage light, a few thick cables trailing out over the edge.

My current system carries more than $25,000 of cables. In storage sits another $10,000 or more, cables I tested and moved on from. Over about 15 years I have bought over 100 of them.

They span every category and connection type: speaker cables, analogue interconnects, digital and power. Prices run from $20 to several thousand per cable, from generic copper and QED XT25 to AudioQuest Rocket 88 and Transparent Super Generation 6. Every one went through my own system before it earned a verdict.

People see the first number and assume I believe everything expensive sounds better. The storage box says otherwise. Did every one of those cables earn its place? Honestly, no, and that is exactly why the box exists.

The box is my record of diminishing returns. The jump from Amazon basics to a $300 cable was bigger than the jump from $300 to $1,000, and above $1,500 a cable is only worth it in a high-end system. Every cable in that box helped me draw those lines.

Anyone can show you the cables in their system. Ask to see the box.
