The A8 won, and the Rose was still better

The Eversolo A8 beat my A6 everywhere and ended one dilemma, but the better audition I had walked away from was still in my head.

I dressed up as the cheap Rose man. I had heard the HiFi Rose RS150 at $5,000, I was not ready to go that far, and I bought the Eversolo A8 for $2,000 instead.

Let me give the A8 its due. It was a clear win over the A6 Master Edition on all fronts: more detail, better imaging, more refinement. It was so good that my old dilemma, the McIntosh DA2 or the A6ME, was no longer a dilemma at all.

But the Rose was still better, and I knew it. Different DACs with different power supplies and different analogue stages sound different, and as you move up to more robust implementations, different is also better. Better, for me, means more convincing to what live sound sounds like.

That is the problem with the sensible upgrade. It wins the comparison you set up at home and loses the one you carry in your memory. The better audition does not go away just because you bought something else.

The A8 ended one dilemma. The Rose had already started the next one.
