The handshake between the groove and your ears

A turntable is the first interpreter of the music, and the one deck I add a personal opinion to earns it with 50 years of refinement.

A turntable is not just a spinning platter. It is the first interpreter of your music, the handshake between the groove and your ears. Choose it well and everything downstream will thank you for it.

When I ranked the best turntables of 2026, I kept my feelings out of it. AI processed the professional reviews, engineering data, awards and measured performance, the way a financial analyst ranks stocks. The purpose was not to tell you how something sounds, because that is subjective.

With one exception. The Linn Klimax LP12 sits at number 10 on the cost-no-object list at around $31,000, and for this one I have a personal opinion. Over 50 years of continuous refinement, no turntable has been improved for so long, and in full Klimax spec it does something with musical flow and rhythm that remains unique in this industry.

Notice what that opinion is about. Not a platter weight, not a bearing, not a motor. Flow and rhythm are what the first interpreter passes on to everything after it, and that is the job. Period.

Specifications can rank a turntable. Only the music tells you whether the handshake is a firm one.
